โ‰๏ธDid you know that many resident and migrator โ‰๏ธDid you know that many resident and migratory birds nest on the Maria Islands Nature Reserve between the months of May to August every year?

Pictured here are the nest and hatchlings of the resident species; the Scaly-naped Pigeon (Patagioenas squamosa). This species tends to nest at or very close to ground level and so it is important to minimize disturbance and harm to both the birds and their nests. Some tips include:๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿฟ

๐ŸŒŸ-Carefully observe the area while walking to avoid trampling plants which can expose nests.

๐ŸŒŸ-It is vital to not startle a bird when approaching a nest, so don't approach nests when young are close to "fledging" (that's when they're just about to be able to fly) as they may leave the nest prematurely. At this age, their survival rates away from or outside the nest are low. Therefore, when young birds are fully feathered and very alert, only observe the nest from a distance - resist the temptation to go close!!

๐ŸŒŸ-Never handle birds or eggs in the nest as eggs can be easily cracked or small nestlings injured.

๐ŸŒŸ-Children observing nests should always be under the supervision of an adult.

YOU can help to prevent harm by consulting the nesting calendar when planning your tours and by understanding how these birds are legally protected (Wildlife protection Act 1980 -ย https://elaw.org/sites/default/files/content_type_law_attachment/Wildlife%20Protection%20Act%201980.pdfย ).

Enjoy Saint Lucia's wildlife safely!!๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ

Just one of the beautiful views you can enjoy from Just one of the beautiful views you can enjoy from the Pigeon Island National Landmark

This one is super-easy to access too - less than 100 m from the entrance, walking along a flat gravel road

Martinique, about 25miles or 40 km across the sea, is not always visible but when it is, it makes for beautiful viewing.

The small cluster of rocks off our coast is called Burgot Rocks, and provides a perch for many birds and fishing grounds and snorkeling opportunities.

Visit PINL today, just $10 entry for adults

Having the largest wing area to body ratio of any bird, the male magnificent frigate triumphantly soars above his competition on wings spanning as long as 7.5 feet from tip to tip. A frigate bird can remain airborne for over two months gliding on air currents during transoceanic migrations!

Teamwork makes the dreamwork Rangers work in team Teamwork makes the dreamwork

Rangers work in teams to patrol, monitor, and record the status of our endangered sea turtles. These rangers are excavating a turtle nest that has already hatched and individually count and record every single eggshell which are more than 50% intact in the nest to determine the amount of hatchlings it contained, does not sound like much but each nest contains between 120-150 eggs!
