#ThrowbackThursday 🌱 Do you know how to protec #ThrowbackThursday 🌱

Do you know how to protect coastal ecosystems?🤔 Here is what we have done in 2022✨
🔅Project
Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) project, to enhance the climate resilience of targeted coastal ecosystems through improved health and management, and strengthening of the coastlines of the PINL and PSEPA.

🔅What we have done
The restoration and revegetation of the sand dunes along Coconut Park, Sandy Beach (PSEPA) in Vieux-Fort was completed in April 2022 as one of the project activities 🌴

🔅Why we chose Coconut Park and Sandy Beach
Significant beach erosion and vegetation loss was observed during the aftermath of the Christmas trough of 2013.

BUT why do we need to protect coastal ecosystems? 🤨
Sand dunes play an important role in coastal protection as they form protective buffers against storm surge, wave attack, and erosion inland. They also provide a unique habitat for flora and fauna🌿
Coastal dunes also reduce damage to infrastructure during severe storms – reducing costs of storm damage, helping keep roads open. Vegetated sand dunes in particular (ones that have lots of healthy plants growing on them), tend to stand up better to erosion from waves🌊
In other words, vegetated sand dunes not only provide a habitat for flora and fauna, they also protect US from disasters!! 😎

🔅The plants used in the revegetation of the sand dunes for this project;
- Sea grapes
- Maho bòd lanmè
- Yellow necklacepod
- Fat pork

#WildlifeWednesday (Contopus latirostris) Hey t #WildlifeWednesday

 (Contopus latirostris)

Hey there, I am the St. Lucia Pewee. As my name suggest you can probably guess that I am small flycatcher 🐦.

If you are lucky and patient you may see me flying out from a perch to catch insects 🐜and usually return back to that same place. I am no bigger than a European Robin or a Chickadee🐤.

I am #endemic to St. Lucia, which means I am NOT found anywhere else in the world, though I am a subspecies of the Lesser Antillean Pewee. Both male and female St Lucia pewees have a peach-orange breast and sandy-brown backs and wings.

We love being in the mountain ⛰ forest 🌳 although you will see us in smaller numbers at lower levels closer to the coast. You may hear our soft, quiet yet piercing ‘piew’ call and squeaking, chattering songs.

Have you seen me before?

#didyouknow The Earth’s 🌎 surface is covere #didyouknow

The Earth’s 🌎 surface is covered with approximately 70% of ocean water💧which plays a critical role in the life on our planet 🌏. Deep sea 🌊 research can aid in the understanding of the Earth’s environment, including changes in weather and climate. It can also help reveal new sources for food 🍱 , #energy and medical 🏥 therapies.

Saint Lucia, has several marine ecosystems that provide numerous environmental and social services such as coastal protection, tourism and climate change mitigation. Specifically, the Pointe Sable Environmental Protection Area (PSEPA) is made up largely of marine elements including beaches🏝 with high recreational value (such as Anse de Sable and Bois Chadon beaches), as well as significance for endangered biodiversity, two Marine Reserves and Ramsar sites (Ma Kôté Mangrove 🌱 and Savannes Bay) and several coral reefs 🪸 and areas of seagrass.

#FlahbackFridays It was an eventful Monday on Oct #FlahbackFridays

It was an eventful Monday on October 17, as a team of rangers from the Saint Lucia National Trust southern office responded to save two turtles 🐢. Unfortunately, one of the turtles were severely maimed and had to be buried.

The staff at the @coconutbay.beachresort alerted that a turtle had lodged itself between boulders on the beach 🏝 overlooking the hotel, which resulted in a quick response from Head Ranger Vincent Clarke. This opportunity was also used to tag the creature as is normally done when they come to lay eggs 🥚, then she was guided back into the sea 🌊.

At around mid-day the southern office received reports of a dead turtle on Sandy Beach. The team responded immediately and discovered a severely maimed creature almost lifeless.

Our experienced Ranger Vincent Clarke with the support of others present carefully saved an excess of 180 eggs 🥚, then buried them in a hole with the approximate depth and size the turtle 🐢 might have dug herself.

This year the turtle nesting season commenced later than usual, and now that the harvesting season is currently opened, there have been a number of encounters of Hawksbill turtles 🐢 coming into lay their eggs 🥚.

#WildlifeWednesday featuring the Carib Grackle (Qu #WildlifeWednesday featuring the Carib Grackle (Quiscalus lugubris)

Hi, my name is Carib Grackle! I am a common and abundant New World tropical blackbird 🐦 who resides in the Lesser Antilles, Northern South America, and throughout various other parts of South America.

The males in my family shows entirely black plumage (feathers)🪶,with a slight purplish gloss. The females have duller plumage, showing a dark sooty brown color.

As alarm 🚨 calls, you may hear us “chuck” or whistle, but our most common is a loud “queek-queek-queek-queek”.

We live in open areas, cultivated areas with trees 🌳 , and very close to human habitation 🏘 and in towns. This may be because we feed on garbage and discarded food 🥘 , and often pop around restaurants for a free lunch 🥙. On a lazy day we scrap the ground in search of insects 🐜 and other invertebrates.

Fun fact….

Carib Grackles are very aggressive birds 🐦 when nesting and will attack anything including humans that it believes is too near the nest.

Like holidays, we celebrate 🎉 our birthdays 🥳 yearly. It’s that day to enjoy cake 🎂, gifts 🎁, parties 🎊, and whatever else makes us happy 😊. However, #birthdays are the perfect opportunity to celebrate our own UNIQUE lives. A time to reflect on the GREAT things we have achieved and ponder on things we hope to do next.
Plus, if you celebrate at the PINL, you may get a few years younger. 👀🙊

Yesterday our staff (Murlina), shared a bit of JOY with one of our local visitors celebrating her birthday. Beautiful and unbothered!

#throwbackthursday The #slnt has been focusing eff #throwbackthursday The #slnt has been focusing efforts this year on the Ma Kôtè Mangrove.

One may ask - Why the Ma Kôtè Mangrove? 🌱

The Ma Kôté Mangrove 🌱 is of immense ecological and socio-economic value to the southeast coast🏝and protects the shoreline from the damaging impacts of storms ⛈, hurricane winds 💨 , waves 🌊 , and floods. The mangrove is home to a diversity of fish 🐠 and invertebrates including some of commercial value, and a number of resident and migratory bird 🦅 species. It supports local livelihoods and a range of other extractive, recreational, and educational uses.

For this year’s #internationalcoastalcleanup activity we partnered with @heineken.saintlucia 🤝🏾. We moved 3,330 kg of waste 🗑 to the Landfill🚜. This equates to 3.36 metric tonnes and 7,341.4 lbs.
