On 3rd March 2023, the Official Handover Ceremony of the Saint Lucia Racer Facility was held at the Department of Forestry🎉🎉

Did you know our Saint Lucia racer snake, “Kouwès” (Erythrolamprus ornatus) is endangered?😢
They used to be found all over the Saint Lucia; however, now it’s estimated there may be as few as only 20 left and they’re only on Maria Islands due to the impact of invasive species such as mongooses😮

The Government of Saint Lucia’s Forestry Department, Wildlife Unit, the Saint Lucia National Trust, Fauna and Flora International, and Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, are working together to save these completely harmless snakes🤝

The secure in-country captive breeding centre has been constructed to study the Saint Lucia Racer and to increase its population with the aim to reintroduce them on the mainland in the future👏❤️
It consists of two facilities: Racer Breeding Facility and Live Food Facility😊

The following people gave remarks for this ceremony🤩:
•	Mr. Augustine Dominique from the Saint Lucia National Trust
•	Mr. Luke Jones from Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust
•	Mr. Adams Toussaint from Fauna & Flora International
•	Mr. Alwin Dornelly, Chief Forestry Officer
•	Hon. Alfred Prospere, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Rural Development
•	Ms. Jeanette Victor from the Department of Forestry

Katjilé Kouwès!!🐍✨ (Think about our indigenous racer) That’s the slogan for this programme💪

#StormDrainRehabilitation for #FloodControl 🌊 # #StormDrainRehabilitation for #FloodControl 🌊 #ThrowbackThursday 🌟

🔸What can we do for the future flooding?🤔 Let’s do what we can do for now👍
In December 2022, Trust Sothern Office rehabilitated one major storm drain located at Beanfield, Vieux-Fort under our Caribbean Diversity Fund Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) project.
The storm drain was almost non-functional and inoperable due to clogging from sediments, dirt and wild plants growth 😨

🔸Why is rehabilitation of storm drains important for flooding? 🧐
A malfunctioning drainage system can cause severe flooding of surrounding communities and can also cause waste water to continue to stay in place🙁
Severe flooding actually happened in the aftermath of the Christmas-eve trough of 2013. Due to intense rainfall, both Sandy Beach shoreline and nearby infrastructure were significantly damaged by flooding. Serious flooding also happened in the Hewanorra International Airport 😢

On completion of the storm drain rehabilitation, our rangers planted some Red Mangrove seedlings along the embankment of the storm drain to stabilize the slopes🌳😍

The Trust Southern Office hosted 5 undergraduate students from the University of Vermont (UVM), US from January 9-11, 2023 🌎✨

They carried out a survey as a part of a variety of community projects in collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce, Manufacturing, Business Development. Cooperatives and Consumer Affairs 😝👍

The UVM students engaged the general public in a survey to determine their perception and knowledge of the conservation work done by the Saint Lucia National Trust😎
The survey was conducted in the areas of Vieux-Fort, Soufriere and Castries.

Thanks to their impressive survey, we realized again that we must make more of an effort to make the Trust’s activities known to people of Saint Lucia!!💪 We would appreciate it if you could keep an eye on our activities through our social media and website!🥰

#FlashbackFriday 😆 Karayib Klima Project- Clima #FlashbackFriday 😆 Karayib Klima Project- Climate Change Adaptation🌼

🔸Why is climate change a problem? 🙄
As global temperatures continue rising, climate change will cause more severe droughts, and changes in precipitation, changes in river system, all of which increase the vulnerabilities of small islands in the Caribbean 😨

🔸So, how does climate change affect Saint Lucia? 🤨
Saint Lucia is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change owing to its geographic location, small size, and high dependency on tourism and agriculture, which are often directly affected by climate change😭
Consequently, Saint Lucia is severely affected by longer drier seasons usually followed by heavy rains precipitated by more frequent tropical waves and depressions☔
One of the effects of these inevitable changes has been Saint Lucia’s clean water availability! 💥

🔸What has Saint Lucia National Trust done to ensure clean water? 🥳
The Trust completed its Karayib Klima Project in April 2022, funded by the French Government.
This project involved the instalment of rainwater harvesting systems at the Pigeon Island National Landmark (PINL) to keep PINL adaptable to climate change👍

🔸This project also aimed to assist with achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 🌎:
Goal 6 – Water and Sanitation,
Goal 8 – Decent work and economic growth,
Goal 12 – Ensure sustainable consumption and productions,
Goal 13 – Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

Guess What! On 26th January 2023, we reached the end of the 2022 turtle monitoring season😍

Although the turtle nesting season normally starts in April every year, 2022’s season took off to a late start. Turtles began to nest along the PSEPA shoreline from May 2022, with hatchings as late as the final week of January 2023. This is the first time this has occurred and is possibly linked to climate change🤔

On 26th January 2023, 31 Hawksbill hatchlings👶 were released into the ocean🌟 These hatchlings were born from a nest formed on October 17th 2022 along the shoreline of @coconutbay.beachresort.

Special thanks to the staff at Coconut Bay for assisting us with monitoring turtle nests and alerting us when hatchlings have emerged. We look forward to continued collaborations in saving our species!🎉
